Staying active: my fitness journey

When I’m not photographing, a lot of times you can find me in one of my favorite places: DSW, Whole Foods, THE GYM! I love staying active ๐Ÿ™‚

I started my fitness journey, 3.5 years ago. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I purchased a scale (scales are evil btw, and I actually don’t weigh myself at all anymore). I took it out of the box, and stood on it with my husband near by. I looked down at the number & told my husband that the scale was BROKEN. I seriously convinced myself that the scale was broken, and rushed the next day to return it. I’m pretty sure I told the cashier, the scale was broken & NOT that I was in totally denial.

A few months later, I finally made an appointment with a doctor for an overall check up, blood work, etc. I mentioned how I was SO tired all the time, and that all I craved were 4 hour naps. Something that I love about my doctor is his honesty (I mean, they should all be like that, right? lol!) He said, what you need is exercise. Me: What? Well, what about medicine? Doctor: How about a good diet & exercising at least 3x a week? Me: You want me to exercise 3x a week!? I can’t do that! Doctor: Yes, you can & you will. You are right on the verge of having chronic fatigue syndrome (which just recently changed to a new name: read about that in the NY Times)


After 7 months, I finally decided I was tired of feeling tired all the time. I was standing in my mother’s kitchen. I had just weighed myself, and I stood there in disbelief when I saw the number on the scale. I had gained ‘newly wed weight’ + more… ugh. Ladies, y’all know what I’m talking about. When your skirts are fitting a little ‘too’ well, and your buttons are barely staying together. ย It wasn’t just about that number on the scale. I was unhealthy. Zero energy. All I wanted to do was sleep.

That day I made a change. I stayed away from all the goodies at my mom’s house, and I was determined to begin an exercise routine. The next day, I went on a walk with Gino. I couldn’t even go around the entire block. I would walk to the corner & back. Sweaty, out of breath, exhausted! Every day I walked with Gino. You can say, we both got fit, because by the time I knew it, we were walking a mile every day. Then we started walking two miles! I started to really enjoy that time we spent walking & learned to love being outside! I embraced sweat & I learned how to eat the right way.


Eventually walking wasn’t enough for me, so I began participating in Zumba classes. I love, love, love to dance!!! So, Zumba was so easy for me. Even if I didn’t know the steps, I just embraced the music & wiggled around, until the next song came on. Lol! Once I really got the hang of Zumba, my body began to crave more & I asked my husband if we can join a gym. At the time, a lot of my girlfriends were getting into fitness too, so I had lots of gym buddies at the time. I began working out at Gold’s Gym & I loved it. The more I learned about weight lifting and the way your muscles worked, the more I fell in love!

Yes, I lost weight. Yes, I gained muscle. But most importantly, I FELT good. ๐Ÿ˜€ I had energy. I was happier. I was in a good mood. My friends, family & even my husband noticed the change right away. I gained a positive outlook on life. If something negative took place, I took it out at the gym. I got rid of that achy feeling my shoulders felt. I learned how to handle my anxiety, because of the gym. It has helped me tremendously.

Now, I don’t think I can over go back to not working out. Don’t get me wrong, I have my moments. I have some weeks that I won’t go to the gym at all. I’ve even had months where I want to give up on the fitness life. Eat unhealthy, never workout, etc. But I know, that if I took that route again, I would be miserable. My body actually won’t allow me too. When I do have those weeks, when I just don’t feel like working out- my body will actually ask me for exercise. It starts feeling achy and tired. I start getting moody too.


So, if you are thinking of starting a healthy lifestyle- I say go for it! I say a lifestyle change, because that’s what you will be doing. It’s not a fad, I’m not into extreme diets, I’m not looking for quick fixes. It’s an overall lifestyle change for a healthier life.

Currently, I took up running. I actually started running back in March. You guys, I’m not a runner. AT ALL. Well, that’s what I thought at least. A lot of my girlfriends are runners, so they participate in 5k’s & marathons. Not me. Yea, no, I’m good. Lol! ๐Ÿ˜› Well back in March, my friend Lauren invited me to participate in a 30 day challenge. 30 miles in 30 days. I hesitated, but at the time I needed a serious push to get me ready for the Cancun destination wedding. Well, I did it! It was a struggle, but I improved! Now, I’m currently doing that same challenge part 2.


Who knows where my fitness journey will take me next. Cross fit? My first 5k? Triathlon? We’ll see! ๐Ÿ™‚

The point of this post is to encourage you. If I can do it, believe me, so can you! Make that time for yourself. Do it for you! I promise, in the beginning you will want to quit. You will have great weeks & you will have bad weeks. Keep going! & if you need an encouraging word, let me know ๐Ÿ˜€

    Ah! I love that eye opening experience. When you look back at how you used to be and feel, you have this amazing feeling of accomplishment.
    Yes, the scale is pure evil. And so are chocolate covered cherries after your fifth one. ๐Ÿ˜
